AFC Walcountians kept themselves in title contention as three second half goals secured a 3-1 victory over third placed AFC Ewell. After a fairly even start to the game on a difficult surface, AFC began to have good spells of possession without creating a clear cut chance, whilst Ewell looked dangerous on the counter and from set pieces. It was a pattern that remained the same throughout the first half with neither keeper being called in to serious action. However, poor defending from a long Ewell throw led to the first goal of the game as it was flicked on and tapped in at the far post to put Walcountians a goal down at the break.
Good early pressure from the Counts was rewarded with an equaliser ten minutes in to the second half when Nathan Leonard, whose deliveries had been dangerous all day, whipped in a corner from the right hand side that evaded everyone before nestling in the top corner via the post. Minutes later Walcountians led, when a drilled Nathan Leonard through ball reached Luke Rodgers who calmly lifted the ball over the keeper.
The game became somewhat cagey after, with Ewell pushing for an equaliser but not creating a clear cut chance and AFC not able to score the goal needed to kill the game off. It wasn’t until the final minutes when a long Jack Johnson throw reached Sam Grosser, who swivelled and slammed a half-volley in to the roof off the net to secure all three points.
The result saw Walcountians leapfrog Ewell and Oxted to move up to third in the table with ten league games left to play.
