Match Report

Walcountians produced a fine team performance to score six goals for the second week running against a good Oxted & District side. A fast start saw AFC leading within ten minutes as Nathan Leonard’s in-swinging corner was met by Steve Scola at the near post, whose downwards header flashed past the keeper. Walcountians continued to control the game and threaten the Oxted goal, deservedly doubling their lead on the half hour mark when Sam Grosser’s corner was met by a thumping header from Steve Scola at the far post.

Ryan Thomas was then denied twice, once by the keeper and once from an excellent last ditch tackle, whilst Luke Rodgers couldn’t find the target when through on goal to extend the lead. However, Steve Scola scored both his and the team’s third when good work on the right hand side led to a tap in from six yards. A soft goal from a corner reduced the deficit to two on the stroke of half time.

Walcountians continued to dominate after the interval and went 4-1 ahead in the 55th minute when Luke Rodgers arrowed a superb left footed strike from 25 yards in to the far corner. Sam Grosser missed his chance to get on the scoresheet and Aidan Hawkins hit the bar as the game became increasingly one-sided. Ryan Thomas latched on to a Nathan Leonard through ball and finished with aplomb across the keeper, before Luke Rodgers got his second of the afternoon when he stroked it in to the bottom corner from 15 yards.

An excellent victory to keep the title race alive ahead of a home game to Merton Social next Saturday, 30th March.
