AFC got back to winning ways with a deserved victory against Merton Social. An early chance for Merton aside that was turned around the post, Walcountians dominated the opening half hour. Ben Macey tested the keeper and had a well struck shot cleared off the line with the keeper well beaten. Dara Obakin cannoned one off the bar before Nathan Leonard made AFC’s early dominance pay dividends with his shot from the edge of the box nestling in the bottom corner.
Merton quickly found themselves level when a long ball saw their centre forward through one-on-one and finish past Matt Scola. AFC couldn’t reassert themselves in the same way they had before the equaliser, although a Steve Scola header from a Nathan Leonard cross cannoned back off the post from point blank range.
Walcountians were the better side in the second half but could not capitalise on the numerous chances they created until Steve Scola was left with a simple header after the Merton keeper had tipped an initial cross-come-shot from the right hand side on to the bar.
Merton again found parity 15 minutes from time when a long throw in was cleared but the subsequent shot from the edge of the box found the back of the net. AFC kept pushing for the winner and, when denied what appeared a blatant penalty after Zuko Akwuba was tripped inside the box, their luck appeared to be out.
However, five minutes from time Ryan McMorrow curled a left footed strike from 20 yards beyond the keeper to deservedly restore the lead. Straight from the resultant kick off, Ryan Thomas nicked the ball from the Merton forward and preceded to run the length of the half before pulling back for the oncoming Ryan McMorrow to slot in his second in as many minutes and secure a second league win of the season.
