AFC Walcountians produced a competent performance to overcome a physical Claygate Royals side and keep themselves in contention at the right end of the table. The game started somewhat evenly, but it was Claygate who came closest to opening the scoring but Aidan Hawkins was in the right place to clear the goalbound ball off the line. Whilst Claygate looked dangerous from set pieces, Walcountians were the more dangerous from open play, having a goal disallowed for offside before deservedly taking the lead through Luke Rodgers.
Clayagte levelled shortly afterwards from a direct free kick, but a superb Sam Grosser pass was controlled and finished immaculately by Ryan Thomas to restore the Counts’ lead before half time. The second half saw chances for AFC to extend their lead – George Harrington hit the woodwork and a Chris Baptiste shot was cleared off the line. Further opportunities followed but were not taken, and at the other end it took the intervention of the AFC post to prevent parity being restored.
Walcountians finally doubled their lead when a quick breakaway saw Ryan Thomas race clear of the defence and hammer past the keeper, off the bar and in. The lead lasted a matter of minutes, though, and it required a Zuko Awkuba goal – a deftly taken chip over the keeper – to put the game to bed. Claygate were reduced to 10 men for the final minutes when they deservedly had a player sent off for a terrible tackle on Aidan Hawkins, who received man of the match for the second time in as many games.
