AFC 1st Team started their first season in Intermediate football with victory over Sporting 50, despite being down to just 12 players and without a recognised goalkeeper due to injuries and suspensions. Walcountians were much the brighter side early on, and their dominance in possession was rewarded when Dara Obakin finished well past an onrushing goalkeeper, having been slipped through by Nathan Leonard.
The lead was doubled soon after when Sam Grosser was through on goal, and squared for Ryan McMorrow to tap in from six yards. AFC couldn’t make the most of their other chances and allowed Sporting back in to the game, with a goal just before half time narrowing the deficit to just one at the break.
Down to a bare 11 after losing Jack Johnson to a fractured foot, AFC struggled to assert themselves as much in the second half. Dan Haines made a superb last-ditch tackle to deny Sporting an equaliser, but aside from that Walcountians limited Sporting’s chances on goal. A superb run from the halfway line by Zuko Awkuba was finished with some neat interchange and fine finish from the same player to restore the two goal advantage.
Sporting had an effort ruled out for offside before Sam Grosser wrapped up the three points in the final minutes with a finish from close range.
