Match Report

AFC came out on top in an encounter containing eleven goals in an entertaining match against Cheam Village Warriors. AFC’s recent poor start to matches continued as they fell behind in the opening ten minutes to a Cheam penalty, although the foul did appear to have occurred outside the box. However, the lead didn’t last long. Sam Grosser dribbled past two Cheam defenders on the right hand side, before pulling it back from the byline for George Harrington to finish via a deflection. Ben Macey put Walcountians in the lead soon after, finishing well from a tight angle after Mike Eglon’s free kick was flicked on by Steve Scola.

An end-to-end half then saw another four goals in quick succession around the half hour mark. The Cheam centre forward finished well to equalise before Sam Grosser scored with a strike from outside the box that probably should have been saved. Ben Macey then tapped in a second after good work again from Grosser, before another well taken Cheam goal reduced the deficit and made the score 4-3 at the break.

AFC were the dominate side after half time, and were soon two goals to the good when George Harding netted his first of the season as he sprinted clear of the defence after being played through and finished well past the onrushing keeper. A number of other chances followed, including both Ben Macey and Dara Obakin hitting the post. It was Sam Grosser who added two more to put the game out of Cheam’s reach. He first created a goal out of nothing, closing down the Cheam defence to win possession before quickly finishing after spotting the keeper off his line. He then completed his hat-trick and a man of the match performance after being put through one-on-one and finishing well at the near post.

There was a consolation goal from Cheam in the final ten minutes, making the final score 7-4. AFC remain top of the table with four games of the season remaining, with the title race set to go down to the wire.
