AFC Walcountians progressed to the quarter finals of the County Cup as they overcame Staines Lammas on penalties. A well contested game, in which AFC created the better chances and twice led, finished 2-2 after Staines equalised with just five minutes of the 90 left.
Walcountians started brightly and were rewarded when they took the lead within 15 minutes. A well worked goal started with Dale Burrett playing in to the feet of Sam Grosser. A perfectly weighted pass saw Ryan Thomas through on goal, and he had made no mistake as he calmly finished with his left foot past the onrushing goalkeeper. AFC continued to control possession despite the divisional gap between the sides, but it was Staines who got the next goal on the half hour mark when their striker was tripped in the box and the subsequent penalty well finished.
A scrappy period followed the goal as Staines began to assert themselves. However, the Counts finished the final ten minutes of the half strongly and got their reward on the stroke of half time as some patient build up saw the ball find its way to George Wilkshire, whose drilled cross led to the Staines centre half turning the ball in to his own net.
The second half ebbed and flowed, with Staines pressing for an equaliser but unable to cause Jack Farthing any issues in the AFC goal, whilst Walcountians often found themselves in good positions in the final third but were unable to find the goal to give themselves a two goal cushion. Staines were reduced to ten men for the final 25 minutes when their player deservedly saw red for kicking out at George Wilkshire off the ball. However, Walcountians could not get the goal they needed to kill the game off and were undone by a set piece just five minutes from time when a free kick was whipped in and headed home.
With the game going straight to penalties Walcountians deservedly book their place in the next round as two Staines players blazed their penalties over the bar. Ben Macey, Dale Burrett, Ryan Thomas and Aidan Hawkins all successfully converted their spot kicks. The quarter final tie, away to Royal Holloway of the Surrey Elite league, is scheduled to take place on 16th February.
