AFC Walcountians moved up to second in the league and as they emerged comfortable victors against Merton Social. The first half lacked the intensity of the preceding week but AFC were nonetheless three to the good by the break.
Walcountians took the lead within 15 minutes when Sam Grosser rose to meet an inswinging Nathan Leonard corner, heading past the keeper via the bar. Whilst not at their best against a well-organised Merton side, Counts still looked threatening going forward and the lead was doubled when fine work from Luke Rodgers saw him pull the ball back from the right hand side to leave Steve Scola the simplest of finishes from six yards. A swift counter attack put the game to bed before half time. A superb ball from George Wilkshire with the outside of his foot set Ryan Thomas free and he confidently rounded the keeper to tap in.
The second half saw Walcountians dominate from start to finish, controlling possession against a tiring Merton who began to sit deeper and deeper as the half progressed. Steve Scola headed home his fifth goal in two games as he nodded home after another Luke Rodgers cut back, whilst Tom Melvin got his first season as he powered a header home from another Nathan Leonard corner.
A defensive lapse in concentration gifted Merton a consolation goal in the final minutes and deny Walcountians a clean sheet.
Four games remain as the season reaches the final furlong, with another home match against promotion chasing Kew Park Rangers next week.
