AFC Walcountians overcame tough conditions and circumstances against Claygate Royals to record a narrow victory and maintain third place in the league. With a number of players forced out of position due to injuries and absence, AFC had the better of the first half on a pitch that was difficult to play passing football on. Sam Grosser and Zuko Akwuba had joy down the wings but couldn’t find the end product to give them the lead, and Jack Farthing was alert to turn a low shot past the post when Claygate did attack.
The breakthrough came just past the half hour mark when Ben Macey superbly controlled a ball in to his feet and slid the ball in to the path of Sam Grosser, who slotted in the bottom corner from twelve yards when one-on-one with the keeper. There were no further additions to the scoreline before half time.
The second half was far tougher with the wind picking up and AFC unable to control possession like they had in the first half. However, in a half of few chances Ryan Thomas almost put the game to bed when he slid one inches past the post following a fine run, whilst Farthing did well to tip a looping shot over the bar that had seemed destined for the top corner.
AFC survived the second half for the game to remain 1-0 and a vital three points accrued ahead of next week’s double header vs Ashtead.
