AFC overcame a disastrous opening ten minutes to begin 2019 with a comprehensive win over Sporting 50. It took less than a minute for Walcountians to fall behind when a Sporting player was bundled over in the box and the resulting penalty converted. They doubled their lead not long after when their striker found himself through on goal and confidently lifted the ball over Jack Farthing in the Walcountians goal.
AFC settled in to the game thereafter and missed an opportunity to halve the deficit when Ryan Thomas dragged a shot wide, but Dara Obakin made amends soon after when he slotted past the keeper when through on goal.
The game opened up in the last 20 minutes of the first half with chances for both sides. Jack Farthing made two fine saves to keep Sporting at bay and at the other end some fine passing play saw Sam Grosser put through on goal and he made no mistake, smashing home past the outstretched keeper to restore parity before half time.
The second half was a different story, with Walcountians dominating a tiring opposition from the opening minutes. Within five minutes the turnaround was complete when Sam Grosser was tripped in the box and slotted home the subsequent spot kick.
By the hour mark the lead was extended a further two times – Ryan Thomas charged down an under hit backpass to make it 4-2, and Nathan Leonard capitalised on a poor clearance to finish clinically from 35 yards. Plenty more swift attacking play caused Sporting 50 problems over the last half hour, but only one more goal was added when George Harrington beat the keeper to the ball and nodded in to the back of the net to round off a fine comeback victory.
