The hallowed turf at Walcountians Sports Ground in Woodmansterne
has proved to be a cut above the rest, for AFC Walcountians’s Pat Hampson has been named the Surrey County FA Groundsman of the Year.
Now in their 12th year, the Award highlights the contributions of the unsung heroes at the grassroots level who ensure thousands of football matches are able to take place week after week around the County.
Despite a difficult season that has seen many playing surfaces hit by rain, sleet and snow, Pat was deemed to have performed exceptionally well to keep Walcountians’ pitch in a superb condition.
And there must be something in the water in the area, with David Brazier from neighbours Woodmansterne Hyde FC earning the accolade last year.
Pat, along with second placed Gary Cross (Holland Sports FC) and third-placed Martyn Grove (Hambledon FC), will now progress to the national stage of the competition, and will be judged by a panel of experts from The FA.
The Surrey County FA would like to wish good luck to all three, who will be honoured at the County FA’s annual Presentation Evening in July.
